Spring gutter cleaning checklist: how to avoid leaks
·4 min
Gutters seem unimportant — until they're blocked and rainwater flows down your facade, causing damp, mould and expensive repairs.
Step 1: Remove leaves, branches and moss from the gutter. Best done in late autumn after leaf fall, and again in early spring.
Step 2: Check the downpipes. Let water flow in from above — does it drain freely?
Step 3: Inspect the fixings. Are the gutters properly attached? A loose gutter fills but doesn't drain.
Step 4: Check the seals at joints. Small cracks widen after winter frost damage.
Step 5: For heavy fouling or hard-to-reach gutters, call a professional. Safety at height always comes first.
Tip: combine gutter cleaning with another service for a combined rate.
